Mini Maths Camps

Due to the success of the Maseno Maths Camps, we introduced “mini maths camps” for schools. This idea arose from the overwhelming popularity of the 1st Maseno Maths Camp and the high demand by schools evidenced in the follow up visits. Unlike the annual event which is hosted at Maseno for a week, schools will have the opportunity to organize this event.

The mini maths camp for schools are half day events organized by the school. Any school in Kenya was welcome to apply, irrespective of location and available resources. The activities varied from school to school but always reflected the aims of the Maths Camp initiative: exposing students to mathematics outside the curriculum to create interest and skills in the subject. Teachers who attended were given a brief introduction to the resources and DVDs left with the schools for them to use as they would like.

Schools could express interest though an online application form or by contacting AMI directly. Once a school expresses interest, the AMI team discussed with the school an appropriate date and time. We encouraged the organising school to invite maths teachers from other schools and to take the lead in the organisation at their school.

The interest from schools was overwhelming and we received more requests from schools than we could handle due to this initiative being run purely by AMI volunteers in their spare time. Below is a list of some of the schools visited as part of the mini maths camp initiative.

Although we may still take requests from schools for mini maths camps, we are beginning to focus more on our new initiative, School Maths Camps. These are similar to mini maths camps, but longer, because we feel a greater impact can be achieved with a 3-5 day event.
